Banyana Banyana of South Africa on Saturday night at the Honneur Stadium, Oudja in Morocco survived a day of football sudden deaths pulling a 4-1 victory via penalty shootouts over Senegalese Lionesses in the last quarterfinals of the Women’s African Football Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Earlier in the day, Ghana created a tournament record to face the first sudden death encounter against Algeria and won 4-2.

South Africa got a chance to end the game at 113th minutes of extra time when VAR approved a penalty for her buy the Senegalese Goalkeeper punched it into corner.

Then came the moment of the sudden death shootouts and fans became prayer Warriors while some sat biting their nails. Hearts were thumping.

South Africa won the toss and Ohlamini scored the first goal; Makhubela scored the 2nd goal; Salvador neatly scored hers and Mbane strolled in majestically to galvanise a tumultuous Mandela salute backed with much noise without their trade mark Vuvuzela, a horn instrument made in 2010 when the country hosted the world Male football cup final.

Incidentally Saturday was set apart as Nelson Mandela Day in memory of their late leader who came from prison to rule and stop apartheid.

The Senegalese Lionesses wept like babies after M. Diop scored their first and only kick while star player N. Ndiaye and M. Mandela lost their kicks.

The two countries met twice in friendly encounters on 1st June 2924 that ended 1-1 and on 4th June 2924 that South Africa won 2-0.

By this victory, South Africa with her fatigue from this stressful match will meet their old foes nine times African champions, the Supersonic Falcons of Nigeria in the semifinal.

The semifinals will be decided on Tuesday 22nd July where Nigeria will lock horns with South Africa at 5pm at Casablanca and at 8pm hosts Morocco that has been scoring penalty goals in each of their matches will trade tackles with Ghana in Rabat.

The 3rd place match is scheduled for Friday 25th at 8pm while the grand finale will be on Saturday 26th July at 9pm.
