…among ‘Bad Girls’ With Red Card.

The Flamingos of Nigeria placed fifth at the final ranking of the world women’s U17 football cup tagged Dominican Republic 2024 with just two matches to conclude on Sunday.

The Bankole Olowookere led team chalked 9 points scoring 9 goals and conceded 3 goals to lead the four teams that lost at the quarterfinal stages among 16 teams that participated in the tournament.

Japan placed 6th having 8 points scoring 8 goals and conceding 4 goals. Ecuador that was in group A with Nigeria placed 7th with 6 points scoring 6 goals and conceding 9. Poland was 8th with 5 points scoring 2 goals and conceded just a goal.

Leading the 8 pack of teams that lost at the group stages is the Samba Girls of Brazil at the 9th position with 4 points scoring 2 goals from Juju and conceded 2 goals.

Africa’s entry, Kenya was in the 10th position with 3 points having scored 2 goals and conceded 6; Columbia was in the 11th position with 1 point scoring 2 goals and conceded 5; hosts Dominican Republic tasting the finals for the first time placed 12th with 1 point scoring 1 goal and conceding 4 goals.

New Zealand placed 13th with 1 point scored 2 goals and conceded 9 goals; South Korea conceded the highest number of goals in the tournament -11 scoring only a goal and having 1 point.

Two teams did not earn a single point. Mexico that occupied the 15th position scoring 4 goals and conceding 10 goals and another Africa’s entry that brought up the rear, Zambia that scored and celebrated her only goal (which was an own goal by England) and the team conceded 7 goals.

The top four teams will be decided after the 3rd place and final matches areplayed on Sunday.

So far 30 matches were played with 89 goals scored (2.97 goals per match); and attendances were 72,255 (2,409 per match)

Paula Prador is now the highest goal scorer with 5 goals beating Shakirat Moshood of Nigeria and Rim-Jong Choe of North Korea who each scored four goals.

There were four Own goals ( goals scored by default) from Renata Mercedes of Dominican Republic against New Zealand; Haruko Suzuki of Japan scored in the match against Zambia; Jocelyn Traver of USA scored against Spain.

Highest assist is 3 from Kyong Ho of North Korea and Nigeria had Harmony Chidi and Opeyemi Abdulwahab with 2 assists each.

Highest Yellow card to an individual which is 3 went to Irune Dorado Alaser of Spain. The bad girls that got red cards were Alba Izquerdo of Spain; Ana Costantin of Brazil; Isabella Rodriguez of Columbia and Omotara Fiyinfoluwa of England.

England will face USA for the Bronze medal on Sunday at Santo Domingo at 7: 30pm Nigerian time and at the same venue, same day the grand finale between Defending Champions and former Champions, North Korea will take place at 11pm.

Awards will be announced after the finals on Sunday in various categories.

Next tournament will take place in Morocco, Africa next year with 24 teams participating instead of the current 16 and henceforth the competition will be annually instead of bi-annually.
