The Demolition of suquatters’ black spot areas in Lagos has continued to have no effect as the slums return as soon as they are cleared or illegal structures demolished.
The reason is that, government has failed to convert the cleared spaces to other public uses.
Fagba gradually turning into slum: Sanwo-Olu must see this!
A competent source in the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment who choose to remain anonymous has disclosed to Newsdawnngr.com the major reason squatters keep re-grouping at ghettos/slums like Fagba, Lekki Coastal Road and other places in the state saying that Lagos State Parks/Garden (LASPAK) set up to beautify open spaces in Lagos in most cases takes two or three months to take effective occupation bm after the state task force team has cleared the slums.
The official who spoke to us exclusively during a recent raid and eviction of squatters along the Lekki Coastal Road said that if the agency charged with the power to convert such places into use, moved in as swiftly as possible, the issue of slums and squatters, would have become a thing of the past in Lagos, a city prides itself as mega one.
He opined that without an effective occupation or beautification of the slums, the squatters will keep coming back as long as the parcels of land remain fallow.
This writer cannot help but agree with him as the taskforce had in the past cleared Fagba/Agege rail line of the miscreants severally and within weeks, they are back there again.
That of Fagba is the worse as the place has become a den of criminals at night and market for condemn home appliances even building materials in the day. All manners of under the table business go on there.
Like Lekki, Fagba squatters gets five days quit notice
One can buy all kinds of stollen household appliances there. There was an incident where a generator that was valued at N.3m was stolen from the original owner and sold at N50,000 there and when the case was reported to the nearby police station, the IPO secretly told the owner to forget it that, the place is a no go area for police as they will mobilize against the police.
Lekki coastal road squatters, others get eviction notice
It is also an abode for ‘aboki okada’ riders who have taken over Fagba, Abule Egba and Ok Oba axis.
