…Congo fail to wipe out the clean sheet of Mali loses penalty
The Eagles of Mali flew gleefully into her 7th Semifinal in 9 appearances of the CAF U17 cup and with a world cup assurance beating lowly rated Democratic Republic of Congo boys with a dominating 3-0 victory at the 19 May 1956 Stadium Annaba.
Ange Tia opened scoring in the 7th minute with an assist from Mamadou Doumbia before Doumbia himself registered the 2nd goal of the night with a Mahamoud Barry assist in the 32nd minute. Barry who scored against Cameroon neatly tucked in a penalty in the 56th minute for the 3rd goal after a Congolese defender touched the ball in the vital area.
Congo had the opportunity to dent the clean sheet of Mali when VAR awarded the team a penalty but substitute Geltanny Bantside kicked it against the woodwork in the 90+6th minute.
Mali joins Senegal and Morocco who have already qualified for the semifinal and also the World Cup. Nigeria meets Burkina Faso at 2000 hours today Thursday to determine the 4th team.
The Democratic Republic of Congo and Mali have met thrice at this age group. Mali won 2-0 on 12th September 2010; on 29th August of same year, it was the highest loss of DRC 1-4 to Mali and on 15th of January 2011 DRC won 2-0 to revenge their first meeting.
Congo made two appearances at the CAF U17 finals at Rwanda in 2011 when the country won the Bronze beating Ivory Coast 2-1 and 2013 at Morocco when she was sent off at the group stage to place 7th.
Mali while hosting in 1995 won the Bronze losing 2-1 to Guinea; At Botswana in1997, she won the Silver losing to Egypt 0-1 and at Guinea in 1999 Mali won the Bronze again defeating Cameroon 1-0 and also won the Bronze in 2001 at Seychelles. Mali freeze out in the last four until 2015 in Niger Republic when she lifted the trophy beating South Africa 2-0 and won the trophy back to back in 2017 at Gabon beating the Black Starlets of Ghana by a lone goal.
These records show that Mali is far more experienced at this age group than Congo and if experience is the pivot of achievements Mali is it. That explains the domination.
At Algeria 2023, Mali in the handicapped group C could only play two matches because South Sudan was scratched for failing the MRI medical test as five of SSD players failed the age determination test. Mali won her two games to top the group defeating Burkina Faso by a lone goal and thumped Lions of Cameroon 2-0.
With 3 goals scored and being the second country after Senegal not to concede a goal harnessing 6 points, Mali made 22 shots at goal with 4 on target and despite only two games played stringed 413 passes which is an indication that with higher passes you could weary and confuse your opponents in football. Mali is rough as she got 31 foul calls and had only 3 corner kicks advantage.
Congo lost to Senegal 0-1; played 1-1 draw with debutant Somalia and also held hosts Algeria to 1-1 draw. She scored 2 goals and conceded 3 having 44 shots at goal with 17 of it on target. Her strings of 335.3 passes on the average is significantly less than that of Mali which showed soccer power belongs to Mali to confuse them. When you look at the fouls mathematically, the 54 fouls of DRC is 18 on the average while the 31 fouls of Mali is 15.5 meaning Congo is more rough and physical.
The Semifinals slating are for Sunday 14th May when Senegal will meet the winner between Nigeria and Burkina Faso at 1700 hours at Constantine and then Morocco will meet Mali at Annaba at 2000 hours.
