…Named Nigeria’s Best Agriculture Reporter of the Year

A staff of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) in Abuja has been awarded the 2019 Nigeria Media Merit Award (NMMA).

Mr Usifo Sebastine Ebhuomhan, a Senior Reintegration Officer (SRO) at the Media Unit of PAP and multiple media award winner already, joined the list of a very few Nigerians that have been so acknowledged as the very best in journalism when he was named Nigeria’s Agriculture Reporter of the Year.

The 2019 edition of the annual NMMA held on Sunday, December 15th at the Muson Centre in Marina, Lagos, in the glamorous presence of leading journalists, gatekeepers, media owners, political leaders and industrial captains.

Mr Ebhuomhan defeated two other nominees, Mr Sina Fadare of The Nation and Mrs Juliana Francis of New Telegraph, with his two-part report titled: Eradicating Global Hunger, published as a freelance writer with Daily Independent newspaper in Lagos.

NMMA award rewards reports published in the previous year. Mr Ebhuomhan’s winning report was published in September 2018, the very last work the citizen journalist produced before joining Amnesty Programme.

The grand awards presentation ceremony also witnessed special recognition and award presentation to citizens that led journalism and citizen freedom at the forefront.

The special awardees include: a former editor of Daily Times and ex-Governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba; founder of Democrat Newspaper and business mogul, Mallam Isa Funtua; economist, development journalist and ex-Chairman of NDDC, Chief Ugochukwu Onyema; as well as the founder of Nigeria’s foremost advertising agency, Insight Communications, Mr Biodun Shobanjo.

The grand awards presentation ceremony was co-hosted by the TY Danjuma Foundation, a development organization founded by General Theophilus Danjuma (retired), whose beautiful wife and award-winning journalist, Senator Daisy Danjuma, delivered the awards’ special guest lecture.

Fostering media excellence in partnership with the society, as the NMMA motto states, this 27th edition affirms the NMMA as Nigeria’s oldest, foremost and most respected award that celebrates the best of Nigerian media.

Winners of the respective media categories are usually presented with certificate of award, a gong and cash reward.

As a befitting icing on the cake, winners of this year’s awards will enjoy a dinner with President Muhammadu Buhari at a date to be announced, the very first time the award will enjoy a presidential dinner.

Mr Ebhuomhan, a proud indigene of Ebelle Town in Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State, thanked the award organisers and sponsors; the editor, management and staff of Independent Newspapers Limited before dedicating the award to the people of Niger Delta and Nigeria.
