LG chairmen, Councillors tenure will end in 2021

Contrary to the unfounded rumour making rounds in some political circles that the tenure of local government chairmen and councillors will end in July 22, 2020 , it will end in July 22, 2021.

The argument of the rumour mongers was that the law which extended the local government officials from three years to four years was signed into law after the chairmen and councillors were sworn – in was far from the truth.

From my investigation, the bill was signed into law by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on May 5, 2016 which is a year or more before July 22, 2017, that the chairmen and councillors were sworn in.

Section 12 (1) of The Local Government Administration Law of 2015 as amended states inter alia: ” The council shall stand dissolved at the expiration of a period of four (4) years commenting from the date when Councillors take and subscribe to their oath of membership.”

Since the local government officials took their oath of membership on July 22, 2017, it is therefore instructive that they will not vacate their offices until July 21, 2021.
