Former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has mourned the passing of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, a respected elder statesman, accomplished public servant, and foremost political leader, who passed away earlier today, Saturday, 12 September 2026, barely three days to his 91st birthday.
Senator Amosun described the death of Alhaji Tukur as a great loss to Nigeria, stating that he was one of the nation’s finest citizens whose remarkable life was defined by pioneering contributions to public service, politics, governance, business, and national development.

The former Governor noted Alhaji Tukur’s public service career, which began in 1975 when he was appointed General Manager/Chief Executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority, where he made significant contributions to the development of Nigeria’s maritime sector.
He also noted his pivotal roles in the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and the African Business Roundtable (ABR), through which he contributed to the advancement of African economic cooperation and private-sector development.
Senator Amosun acknowledged Alhaji Tukur’s remarkable contributions to Nigeria’s political development which earned him several political positions including the civilian Governor of old Gongola State (now Adamawa) in 1983, Minister of Industry between 1993 and 1995, and later National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP between 2012 and 2014.
“Our nation’s political landscape has been greatly enriched by the life and contributions of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur. He distinguished himself through decades of service to Adamawa State, the Northern Region, Nigeria, and the African continent. The conferment of the prestigious national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) on him, as well as the traditional chieftaincy title of Tafidan Adamawa, are enduring recognitions of his immense contributions to the nation and his community,” Senator Amosun stated.

Senator Amosun extended his heartfelt condolences to the Tukur family, the government and people of Adamawa State, as well as his numerous business and political associates, friends, and all those mourning the loss of the elder statesman.
He prayed that the Almighty Allah (SWT) grants him Aljannah Firdaus and gives his children, grandchildren, political associates, and the entire family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.
