WAFCON2026: Malawi Scorch Out Egypt 3-1 in Group C Win.

The Cleopatras of Egypt have been scorched out of the WAFCON 2026 tournament by Scorchers of Malawi 3-1 in the 2nd group C match.

 

The 10 women Malawi team did it same way they hit defending champions, Nigeria scoring 3 goals first before relaxing as Rose Kadzere opened scoring in the 35th minute through Temwa Chawinga assist and then Faith Chinzimu lone strike made it 2-0 in the 45+2 minute before the break.

 

Rose Alufandiku of Malawi bagged a red card in the 52nd minute but that missing gap propelled Tenwa Chawinga to head into net the 3rd goal in the 69th minute before Eman Hassan got a pass from Eldanbouki to score a consolation goal in the 71st minute. Fans were expecting Egypt would get another goal to let score board read 3-2 as Nigeria was beaten but the Egyptians could not make it.

 

The Egyptians had 3-1 yellow cards from a 12-12 foul calls but Malawi played the game in the midfield.

 

Egypt ranked 99 and Malawi had played 5 games before with Egypt winning 3, Malawi won a game while there was a draw. Of the 10 goals Scored Egypt scored 7 so everyone expected Egypt to win.

In the world cup qualifiers of 14th June 2008 Malawi won by a lone goal but on the return leg it was Egypt that won 2-0; Two friendly matches arranged in December 2009 it was 1-1 and in June 2015 Egypt won 2-1 while the last time they met on 24th Match 2023 Egypt won 2-0 in a WAFCON match.

 

Giant killers debutante Scorchers of Malawi ranked 153 tops group C table with 6 points with +3 goals difference; Zambia that will play Nigeria in the 2nd crucial group game at 9pm is 2nd with 3 points and +6 goals difference; Nigeria with no point with -1 goals difference is 3rd while Egypt that is technically out of the tournament though having an outstanding match against Nigeria has no point and has -8 goals difference.

 

Tomorrow Sunday 2nd round matches will end with group D as Ghana takes on Cameroon at 6pm and Mali faces Cape Verde at 9pm.

 

All the last group games will take place simultaneously at 9pm each day. On Monday Group A will see Senegal vs Morocco and Kenya tackle Algeria. On Tuesday in group B, Tanzania will play against Ivory Coast and the Banyana Banyana will have a redemption or go home match against Burkina Faso.
