Nigerian motorists are facing a significant surge in expenses for vehicle documentation following a major announcement from the Joint Tax Board (JTB).
Effective Sunday, June 8th, 2025, nationwide price increases for motor vehicle number plates, motorcycle number plates, and driver’s licenses will come into force, impacting all vehicle owners across the country.
The JTB, the apex body for revenue authorities in Nigeria, disclosed the substantial price adjustments in a public announcement via a newspaper advertorial. The new fee structure reveals dramatic increases across various categories, with some charges more than doubling the previous rates.

According to the JTB directive, standard private vehicle number plates and commercial vehicle number plates will now cost ₦30,000 each. Owners seeking fancy vehicle number plates will face a staggering ₦400,000 fee, while out-of-series number plates will be priced at
The cost of obtaining or renewing driver’s licences has also seen a sharp upward revision. A three-year motor vehicle driver’s license will now cost ₦15,000, and a five-year license will be ₦21,000. Tricycle driver’s licences and motorcycle driver’s licences will cost ₦7,000 for three years and ₦11,000 for five years, respectively.
The JTB justified these significant price hikes by citing the “introduction of enhanced security features in the number plates and driver’s licenses, and incidental increases in production costs.”
The directive from the JTB mandates immediate implementation of these new fees by all government agencies and Motor Vehicle Licensing Authorities nationwide from the effective date.
Nigerians requiring new or renewed vehicle documentation will need to apply through the National Vehicle Identification System portal at nvis.frsc.gov.ng or visit their nearest Vehicle Licensing Authority office, where these considerably higher charges will apply. This development is expected to add significant financial pressure on vehicle owners across Nigeria.
