Rev. John Hayab, Country Director, Global Peace Foundation has identified widespread dissatisfaction with African political systems as the primary cause of protests in various nations.

Hayab disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

An expert in peace advocacy, Hayab posited that many African countries are grappling with corruption, economic instability, and a lack of accountability from their leaders.

These factors, he said, have led to a growing sense of disenchantment among the populace, particularly the youth, who feel that their aspirations for a better future were being thwarted.

“The protests we are witnessing are not merely about specific grievances but a reflection of deeper frustration with the political system that has broken down.

“In many cases, citizens feel that their voices are not being heard, and their needs and aspirations are being ignored.

Hayab said the recent protests in countries such as Kenya, Sudan, and Ethiopia, among others, where citizens took to the streets to demand a change in the system, were a legitimate form of expression of frustration, anger, and hopelessness, they could lead to violence and instability if not handled with care.

“Governments must engage in meaningful dialogue with their citizens.

“Listening to the concerns of the people, and making concerted efforts to address them can pave the way for peace and stability,” he said.

Hayab, however, called for collaborative efforts among civil society organisations, religious leaders, and governments to promote a culture of peace and understanding.

He outlined the importance of education in empowering citizens to advocate for their rights in the right manner and participate constructively in the political process.
