The story of how Ms. Onyeka Onwuenu came to musical firmament in Nigeia is an open copy to most Nigerians above 50; but what is not known to a greater number of them is that she is a strong willed woman that loves his dad to the point of penning a book ,…., in his memory.
Onyeka known poetically as elegant stallion, a coinage by Azuka Jebose Molokwu, first breezed into the scene in 198Os with ‘Walk Right Back to Me,’ an Isely Brothers song produced for her by the late Sonny Okosuns on EMI Records label then a youth coper on Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) straight from the United Nations (UN) where she worked for many years before returning home to contribut her quota to the development of the country. At the NTA, she produced a documentary depicting the corrupt/wasteful nature of Nigerian leaders titled Squandermia of the Riches. A documentary that shook the nation and made her an instant cerebrity.
After rhen, she began to release tons of songs of her own like the very popular ‘One Love. ‘
She was among the few musicians in Nigeria together with Okusuns that flew Nigeria’s flag at the frontline states of Africa in demand for political freedom for the then frontline states.
Onyeka made her mark so much in the music scene that no major concert like Children if Africa, Lekki Sunsplash, Bensin and Hedges concert, et al, is complete without the ‘elegant stallion .’
Her art was so good that Benson and Hedges, the international cigarette brand that was behind Golden Tones, signed her on and recoded and released one of her albums in the 1990s.
In the political front, she was appointed..chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture on September 16 2013 after two attempts at becoming the chairman of Ideato North Local Government Area.
