Ogun-Lagos boundary : Face of Neglect and abandonment

Hercules bus stop may not be popular or relevant to decision makers in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital but it is not so for thousands of residents who commute this abandoned border with Lagos.

What makes Hercules bus stop unique and dangerous is the gully through which vehicles meander every morning to cross to Toyin bus stop just a little over two hundred metres to Lagos.

With just a tip of the steering, the driver and passengers will find themselves thrown into the deep gully.  They will be lucky if they are rescued alive.

This has been the situation in the past fifteen years.

Such is the traffic snarl caused by the bad road and gully which has eaten more than half of the narrow road that a journey of five to ten minutes between Giwa junction-another perennial gridlock, now takes an hour especially during rush hours.

Yours truly got engineers from the state works ministry to inspect the site in 2012 but nothing came out of it. Just promises on end.

Last year August 2022, ten years later, Ogun commissioner for Works, Engineer Akinsanya who inspected the gully and bad road situated close to Mobil Filling station and a refuse dump promised the governors attention but today nothing came out of it.

It was all sound and fury preparatory for election six months ahead.

Just like the government promised last week to fix the roads in the Ijoko, Agbado, Akute axis after the rains, same promise was made last year to fix the road and do something about the gully .

One only hopes that people will be the focus of those elected by people and not self.

As President Bola Tinubu told state governors when he met them last month ,they applied to serve the people and not self.

The various governments in Ogun state in the last twenty years have been unkind and ‘wicked’ to people in the border area with Lagos. Incumbent government of Prince Dapo Abiodun has been full of empty promises since last year especially towards election period but nothing has been done .

Posterity will definitely judge our leaders.
