The extension of the on going strike action by the Academic Union of Universities,ASUU was greeted with wild protests Monday.
the protests started at the University of Lagos gate entrance as students of public universities, gathered immediately the extension of the strike became public knowledge

Again, ASUU extends strike by 12 weeks

The irate students, who might have been waiting for good news about their resumption of classes, stormed the UNILAG precincts, few hours after ASUU announced that it was extending the action for another 12 weeks, meaning that they would stay at home for another three months.

ASUU’s announcement which they said was the outcome of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the body hinged the action on the inability of the government to resolve all the issues that led to the strike, stating that the new time frame was to enable it do so.

The protesting students who were apparently scandalised by the fresh action marched along the road leading to the UNILAG gate, causing slight disruption in vehicular movements, with heavily armed and hooded security operatives, including men of the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps providing security on the ground, according to reports.

Chanting solidarity songs, the students, rued their long stay at home, saying that they were tired as the strike had caused a disruption to their academic calendar and affected their plans.

Calling for immediate resolution of the crisis between the striking university lecturers and the Federal Government the students also displayed banners with inscriptions like End ASUU strike now, Strike has killed our educational sector, we need to go back to school, We are tired of FG/ASUU and Age no de my side.

A mother who joined the protesting students, Mrs. Margret Akinwande, was quoted by The Nation that she joined the protest because of her children, urging the Federal Government as a matter of urgency to intervene in the situation, with student activist Femi Adeyeye, saying the protest was a warning with a bigger one in the offing.
