From November 21st to 27th, 2021, Nigerian fine art photographer Chidozie Maduka held his first solo exhibition titled “Ntughari Uche” at The Art Place in Ikeja, Lagos.

The title, “Ntughari Uche,” is an Igbo word that means “Reflection.” Through a series of powerful photographs, Maduka explored deep and personal themes like identity, emotion, and the way we see ourselves.

The main subject of the series is a young boy standing in front of a mirror. In one of the most emotional photos, the boy reaches out to touch the mirror — not just to see his reflection, but to connect with something deeper: truth, understanding, and maybe even forgiveness. His face is partly covered by his hand, showing how we sometimes hide parts of ourselves, even from our own eyes.

Maduka uses a simple and clean style in his photos. His focus on shadows, light, and space allows viewers to truly feel the emotions behind each image. Every photo invites you to pause and reflect — not just on the image, but on yourself.

This exhibition wasn’t just about photography — it was about what it means to be human. It asks important questions: Who are we, really? What do we hide? What do we hope others never see?

The exhibition drew art lovers, collectors, fellow creatives, and many curious visitors. Some stood in silence. Others were visibly moved. Many came back more than once.

For Chidozie Maduka, “Ntughari Uche” is more than a project. It’s a message — one that speaks to anyone who has ever looked in the mirror and searched for something more.

This exhibition marks a special moment in his career — and a strong step forward for contemporary Nigerian photography.
