Barely 24 hours to the assumption of office of the new Commissioner of Police (CP) for Anambra State, Christopher Adetokunbo Owolabi, gunmen razed down Obosi Police Station, killing two police officers in the process.
A similar scenario had played out shortly after the outgone Police Commissioner, Monday Kuryas, took office.
Information has it that the gunmen, in large number, stormed the police station between 11:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m., releasing all the suspects in the cell before setting the property on fire.
The names of the two police officers who died during the attack were given as James and Awalu.
It was learnt that the officers were killed inside a non-functional filling station close to the police station, while trying to stop the gunmen from gaining entrance to the station.
According to sources living in the area, when other police officers on duty noticed unusual movement, they allegedly took to their heels, giving the hoodlums opportunity to carry out their plot.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ikenga Tochi, described the incident as unfortunate and promised to provide a formal reaction later.
