Priotise Lagos/Ota-Abeokuta Road in next budget, Senate tells FG

The Senate on Wednesday asked the Federal Government to Priotise Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Road in the next Budget.

The motion which was moved by Senator Adeola Solomon representing Lagos West and seven other senators, called for the urgent need for palliative repairs and total reconstruction of Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Express Road.

During the house plenary today, Senator Tolu Odebiyi who seconded the motion said: “The motion is quite timely because the volume of people that travel on that road is enormous. I think it is important that priority is given to this road and ensure the road is done.

“I think it is a road that needs to be done urgently and I will urge that this motion is supported.”

Senator representing Lagos East, Sen. Tokunbo Abiru said that the road is one of the major infrastructural access in the Nation.

In his words: “I rise to support the motion for the construction of this road. I also think I should add that this particular road is one of the major infrastructural access that we have along that corridor. It is very important that we lend our support to it.”

Another member of the senate representing Kano South, Senator Kabiru Gaya also supported the rehabilitation of the roads.

“I rise to support this motion ably moved by Senator Adeola Solomon. I support the motion that the road should be rehabilitated.”

Adopting the motion, the senate, “urged the Federal Ministry of Works and FERMA to immediately put in motion machinery to temporarily rehabilitate the road pending its total reconstruction to reduce the hardship and suffering of our people.”

In the same line, “mandated the Committees on Federal Ministry of Works and FERMA to request for a status report from FERMA and the Federal Ministry of Works in terms of budgetary allocations for repairs and maintenance and extent of work done over the years.”

The senate, however, “urged the Federal Ministry of Works to include further funding for the reconstruction of Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Express Road in the next Appropriation Bill.”
