…Says institutions has failed
A three time governorship candidate in Ogun state,Ogbeni Lanre Banjo, has called for a total reawakening to arrest the drift of the country from total systemic collapse with its disastrous consequences for the nation.
He said in an on -line interview with Newdawnngr, that all the institutions of state and governance in the country has failed adding that problem of survival has made professionals who could save the country to surrender to the principle of survival adding” budgeting means nothing in Nigeria and Auditors have been made to surrender to the principles of survival rather than respecting accounting and auditing standards.”
Banjo,who is a chattered public accountant observed that even lawyers are now specialised in hanging cases of those who were charged for stealing public funds.
Speaking on the nations constitution,Ogbeni Banjo who is an American trained accountant observed that the country has turned the operation of the constitution borrowed from the United states upside down such that it is operated to suit the whims and caprices of those in power at any point in time.
He said that as things stand today,the operation of the constitution which is supposed to be federal has become Unitary adding,” as we speak when Vigilantes arrest thieves, the Nigerian police would release the thieves and arrest vigilantes,so how could Amotekun be effective when you tuck them under purposely made ineffective Nigerian police.This unitary system needs to be done with”.
On the economy,he also wondered why the federal government has not deem it necessary to create Nigerian National Gold and Diamond Corporation which will make Gold and other mineral deposits in the North to be nationalised.
On the abdication of the principle of equity, he queried why the federal government find it difficult for oil obtained in the south to be managed by Southerners but find it convenient to create the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation(NNPC) which is being managed largely by the North,” whereas the gold deposits in the North are being managed by Northerners.”
In other to ensure equity in the nation arrangement,he called for the creation of more states in the south to achieve balance in what he described as the present lopsided structure,while creation of local governments should be the exclusive preserve of the states.
Said he,”the creation of local governments should be one of the primary responsibilities of the state not Federal.So if Ogun state like let it create a million local governments,it is none of the business of the Federal government while religion and state should be distinct and separate. Our constitution should not make reference to any religion. Those who want to fund Sharia and other Islamic Institutions should reserve the right to do so and make their own laws in their states” .
