Property worth millions of naira were destroyed on Tuesday as fire gutted the popular Sabo market in Sagamu, Ogun State.
The fire, which razed a section of the market situated along Sabo road in Sagamu town, affected over 300 shops and stalls as well as consumer goods and other valuable items.
New Telegraph learnt that the inferno, which started about 2:00am, was allegedly caused by an electric surge after public power was restored in the area.
Eye witnesses said a team of firefighters, who arrived the scene about two hours after the fire started, allegedly did not have water to put it out.
It was learnt that the fire was compounded following explosions from gas cylinders inside some of the shops in the market.
Our correspondent, who visited the market, observed that the fire affected mainly the section where clothes, kolanut, herbs and food items, among others, were sold.
A security personnel at the market, who was present when the fire started, Olufemi Ajayi, told New Telegraph that his initial efforts to contain the fire failed.
Ajayi, a member of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), claimed that firefighters arrived after 4 am .
