Ogholi who hit the Nigerian musical scene in the 80s with her own brand of reggae but disappeared to France in the early 2000s, said in a WhatsApps interview that her fans in other African countries still adore and buy her CDs years after they topped the charts home and abroad.
According to her, because of the way they patronise her works, a recording company in the UK wanted to remix one of her old songs, which she recorded with at DECCA West Africa for Polygram, now Premier Music until the company was told that DECCA no longer exists. The song, she said, is titled ‘Ijo’ and was rendered in her native Isoko dialect of Delta State adding that they love it so much in England.
“When they (the fans) listened to some of my old songs, they will write me as if they are talking to their girlfriend. There was a music label in London (England) that wanted to remix one of my songs that I recorded on DECCA base on that. They pulled out when told that DECCA no longer exists. The kind of love my fans show me is unbelievable,” she revealed in the interview that took place past 3 a.m on Monday, November 11, 2019.
Asked whether the payment issues she once had with Premier Music back here in Nigeria has been resolved and if the company is still paying her royalty, she said, “Yes ooh. Premier Music is real.”
