The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Chief Patrick Ukah, made the appeal when executive members of the Delta State Council of the NUJ paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
Chief Ukah said the role of the media, as watchdogs in the society, cannot be overemphasized as they played a very key role in publicising the activities and policies of government by informing the citizenry.
He urged the union members to find ways of curbing the excesses of the on-line media reporters because some of the stories published by them were sensational and if not checked, could bring about lack of confidence in the union as they were seen to be part of body.
The Commissioner said the ministry had initiated some new policies such as the “Back to School Programme” whose aim is to ensure that students are integrated quickly back to school as they resume and called on members of the union to give adequate publicity to this policy when it kick starts.
He promised to continue to work with the union to ensure that the Stronger Delta vision of the state governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, towards the education sector of the state is archived, while thanking them for the cooperation and support he got from them as Commissioner for Information in the last dispensation.
Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the NUJ, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu, congratulated the commissioner on his appointment and promised that the union would partner with the ministry to ensure that it’s activities are well publicised and showcased by it’s members.
He commended Chief Ukah for the steps he has taken in repositioning the education sector within the few weeks he assumed office, while urging him not to relent in his efforts in bringing the education sector in the state to enviable heights.
