No fewer than 23 persons, suspected to be members of a dreaded cult group, have been apprehended by the police in Ogun State.
The cultists were arrested Wednesday evening while getting set for initiation process at Ilaporu, Awa-Ijebu, in Ijebu North local government area of Ogun State.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the police command in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, the cultists had converged on the town from other towns such as Ijebu-Igbo, Ago-Iwoye and Oru-Ijebu, for the purpose of initiating new members and later unleash terror on the residents of Ilaporu as a sign of admitting new members.
Abimbola, a DSP, said as soon as they assembled at the location, policemen attached to Awa-Ijebu Division, through intelligence reports got wind of the unlawful assembly, consequent upon which the DPO of Awa-Ijebu, SP Olu Monday led his anti-robbery team to the scene and arrested the 23 suspects.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to Anti-Cultist and Anti Kidnapping Section for proper investigation and prosecution
