The team that takes advantage of early chances at the round of 16 match between Flamingoes of Nigeria and Mexico on Thursday will March gallantly to the quarterfinals of the tournament though records show advantage Nigeria.
Already there’s papalpable fear in the Mexico camp over meeting Nigeria that edged defending champions, North Korea 2 solid goals to nothing but records show both teams have to be cautious and avoid banana peels that will send them home.
It is there 3rd meeting at this age group. Nigeria won the first meeting of 2014 group D game on 24th March 3-0 and drew1-1 on 7th October 2024. I opened FIFA to see their records. Mexico played total 33 matches winning 12, drew 6, lost 15, scored 43 goals and conceded 56. Nigeria played 32 games winning 15, drew 7, lost 10, scored 66 goals and conceded 42. Nigeria obviously has a better record even with their previous meetings.
The current form looks interesting as Mexico played three games beat Australia by a lone goal; beat Chile 3-1 and lost to Spain 0-2. They scored 4 goals and conceded 3 with a clean slate. Nigeria was shocked by Poland 2-1; beat Puerto Rico 2-0 and hammered defending champions North Korea 3-1 which is a world upset. On current form Nigeria is a better scoring team and the Nigerian Defence is better too.

Three Mexican players could be very dangerous to handle as they have more shots at goal than Nigerian players. Citlalli Reyes has 11 shots at goal, Mia Urbano and Natalia Perez has 10 shots at goal each. Nigerian Coach Busari will need to mark them out. Young Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Queen Joseph has 8 shots at goal each meaning Nigeria should do shot training from all angles.
Nigeria had 44 shots on attempt against 56 of Mexico and Nigeria had 15 shots on target and Mexico has 20 showing Mexico could nick a victory if Nigeria is not careful.
Nigeria should take advantage of their superior set pieces from corner kicks and dead balls which is 5.67% – 2.67% of corner kicks but Mexico could dominate play as they have 50-47 average ball possessions. Nigeria should watch for rough plays and avoid injuries as Mexico had 4-2 yellow cards of caution.
Five rough players were spotted. Mia Urbano of Mexico as well as Queen Joseph and Mary Dunstan who fouled 7 times each should watch out for yellow cards or straight red. Same for Define Zoe Sanchez who has 5 foul calls and Esther Stephen who has 4 foul calls.
Mexico won a Silver in 2018, and Bronze at the last tournament in 2025 and also made quarterfinals twice in 2014 and 2016. Nigeria won Bronze in 2022 and made quarterfinals four times in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2024. These show both teams have experiences. Can experience or grit win on Thursday at 4pm?
Nigeria has 120 minutes of football to be in their sixth quarterfinals if they allow the match to drag into extra time. That could be much dangerous. Nigeria has the potentials to end the match victoriously at regular time.
Nigeria’s acting Secretary General of the Nigeria Football Federation NFF, Dr Ikpeme who is a professional Sports Psychologist has been stuck with the Flamingoes since the team defeated the defending champions, North Korea 3-1 speaking to the coaching crew and players especially the young goal merchants to give Nigeria more goals.
One of them told me to tell Nigerians “a ti leri pe a ma lu won pa patapata” (we have vowed we will destroy them completely with goals”. Nigerians are waiting to see the vow fulfilled no Mexican waves on Thursday. Mexican waves is a celebration of goals from one end of the stands to the other coming in a musical tone. No such thing for Mexico.
