President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to deliver a Joint Address to the National Assembly on June 12, 2026, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary.
The announcement was made by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) responsible for organising the national celebration.
Speaking at the inauguration held at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, said the presidential address would be one of the major highlights of the Democracy Day programme approved by the Federal Government.
Akume described Democracy Day as an important occasion for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices made by citizens who fought for the restoration of democratic governance.
He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle, particularly the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose election is widely regarded as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
According to the SGF, the annual commemoration also provides an opportunity for the Federal Government to highlight its efforts in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting national development despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.
With only days remaining before the anniversary, Akume urged members of the committee to begin preparations immediately, stressing that the activities would reflect the mood of the nation while adhering to the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility.
