The Bayelsa State Environmental Sanitation Authority has arrested 30 persons and impounded over 10 vehicles for flouting sanitation laws during the April environmental sanitation exercise in Yenagoa.

Led by the Authority’s Chairman, Hon. Timothy Diekivie Itiedu, the monitoring team, which included Permanent Secretary Dr. Ifiemi Ikoko, enforced strict compliance across the metropolis, targeting illegal vehicular movement and public adherence to sanitation regulations.

At Ekeki Transportation Park, Hon. Itiedu ordered transport workers and traders to immediately clean their frontages and the entire facility. He berated the park’s management over poor sanitation, citing indiscriminate waste disposal and widespread littering. The Authority, however, assured that overflowing refuse bins would be evacuated.

Park Chairman, Mr. Tekena Timikiegha, lauded the sanitation team’s efforts and pledged compliance. He appealed for the provision of hand gloves and nose masks for park workers.

The situation was worse at Opolo Market, where traders engaged in full-scale business during restricted hours. The Chairman ordered the seizure of goods, stressing that prior warnings had been ignored. The monitoring team supervised defaulting traders as they cleared littered roadsides.

Vehicles caught loading passengers or moving during the exercise were impounded, while offenders were arrested on the spot.

At Igbogene Toll Gate along the Bayelsa-Rivers border, Hon. Itiedu probed reports of vehicular movement into the state. But ASP Ubi Abami, the senior officer on duty, debunked the claims, stating that all vehicles remained parked at the boundary until the 10:00 a.m. restriction lapsed.

The Authority confirmed that all 30 violators and owners of impounded vehicles will be arraigned before the Sanitation Court at the Magistrate Court, Fire Service, Yenagoa.

New Waves reports that the monthly sanitation exercise holds every last Saturday, with movement restricted between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.
