Says Senegal won on the pitch but denied victory in the boardroom
Former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has criticised the handling of the Africa Cup of Nations, alleging that the Senegal national football team were unfairly denied victory despite their performance on the pitch.
In a strongly worded statement, Sani claimed that Senegal “won the AFCON on the pitch but was snatched by CAF in the boardroom,” describing the situation as “unconscionable” and a dangerous precedent for African football governance.

He further argued that the actions of the Confederation of African Football undermined the integrity of the competition, particularly given that the Senegalese team reportedly protested during the match but returned to play until the final whistle.
According to Sani, such conduct should not justify what he termed an “afterthought daylight robbery.”
He also suggested that the decision may have been influenced by a desire to compensate Morocco for hosting the tournament despite not emerging victorious.
