Obi after the attack
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential frontrunner, Peter Obi, was caught in a shooting incident in Benin, Edo State, shortly after attending a political meeting at the party’s secretariat.
According to a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Valentine Obienyem, Obi had visited the ADC secretariat where he joined former Edo State governors, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, alongside other party leaders, to formally welcome Barr. Olumide Akpata into the party.
Obienyem stated that while at the secretariat, members of the entourage noticed unusual movements by individuals in Siena buses around the area.
“As Obi left the secretariat for Chief Oyegun’s residence, these vehicles followed him,” the statement said. “Initially, the convoy did not suspect anything, as the movements of the Siena buses appeared inconspicuous.”
The situation reportedly escalated shortly after the convoy arrived at Chief Oyegun’s residence.
“Once Obi’s car entered the residence and the gate was shut, the Siena buses arrived and opened fire on the convoy,” Obienyem disclosed. “At that time, Obi’s vehicle was safely inside, while security vehicles and backup personnel were still outside.”

According to the statement, the attackers fired at multiple vehicles and attempted to breach the residence.
“The hoodlums, suspected to be on a mission, fired at multiple vehicles and attempted to breach Chief Oyegun’s residence, shooting repeatedly at the gates, until security personnel returned fire, forcing them to flee,” it added.
The former Anambra State Governor was said to be unharmed in the incident.
“Thankfully, no lives were lost, though several people sustained varying degrees of injuries,” the statement noted.
