Lassa Fever:Bingham College of Medicine Holds Procession for Fallen Dr. Oboyi.

Staff, Specialist Medical Doctors and medical students of the College of Medicine of the Bingham Teaching Hospital, Jankwano-Jos in Plateau State Wednesday held a candle light procession for their late colleague, Dr. Salome Oboyi moving from their gate to the Jos Polo ground.

No one in the procession was willing to speak with Patmos Media Line wearing a protracted pensive mood making some people in the procession to weep and on lookers especially women to wail at the passing away of the brilliant Doctor whose passage on Monday 2nd February shook Jos.

Authorities of the Medical College and the Teaching Hospital were not willing to speak to us either as top staffers were moved to tears. A top staff of the College of Medicine who knelt down begging not to be quoted or have her photograph said “nobody will speak because the late Doctor was a friendly, humble and helpful Doctor never tired of working”.

Dr. Oboyi who trained at the University Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri, had a Housemanship at the Federal Medical Centre, Markurdi before enrolling for her specialization in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a Masters in Public Health becoming a senior Registrar with a year to become a Consultant O&G Doctor was treating a patient that has Lassa Fever in the hospital renowned for treating such ailment before being affected and dying two days later.

Her professional colleagues, the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) lamented that her death has left colleagues, friends, and patients deeply saddened, as she is remembered for her dedication, professionalism and selfless services to humanity”.

NARD in expressing sadness said, “her passage is a painful reminder of the daily risks Doctors take while serving humanity” adding that her death was “a glaring symbol of a systematic failure that continues to claim the lives of our finest minds in silence”.

The Resident Doctors in Federal establishments were actually on strike when Dr. Oboyi passed on. Their Hazard allowance that was five thousand Naira per month was in 2021 raised to forty thousand Naira per month which the totality for a year was not half of the wardrobe allowance of a Nigerian Senator.

Dr. Oboyi is an Idoma lady who hails from Agbaha in Otukpa, Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State. As at the time of filing this report, her family or the Idoma tribe of Nigeria has not published public information of a finalized or formal burial program like service of songs, funeral services or interment.

The Bingham University authorities and the Plateau State Government that greatly benefits mostly from the University Teaching Hospital has not made a comment neither have they shown sympathy to the family of Doctor Salome Oboyi who died in active services.
