Some residents of Bauchi metropolis have lamented sudden surge in the prices of Liquefied Natural Gas (LPG), also known as cooking gas, amid acute scarcity of the product.

They said the trend is exposing them to difficulties in accessing the product and financial strain.

A check by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Friday in Bauchi metropolis, showed that prices have shot up by over 20 per cent in the last five days.

Many people have joined queues in the available gas retail stations while others had their stock run out.

One kilogramme of cooking gas was sold at N1,350 as against it’s old price of N1,020, while refilling a 12-kiligramme cylinder costs N16,200 as against N12,960

Aisha Musa, a housewife, described the previous price of the product as more affordable to most households.

She said the LPG was generally popular among families due to its cheaper prices, availablilty and efficiency compared to fuel wood and charcoal.

“When you calculate the price of the charcoal you buy over a period of time, it’s higher than the gas over the same period of usage.

“For instance, if we buy a five-kilogramme of gas and use it for two weeks, it’s much more economical than buying charcoal for the same period,” she said.

Musa called for proactive measures to enhance access and regulate prices of the product.

Ismail Raji, a resident of Yelwa quarters, decried the hike in cooking gas prices, adding the situation forced him to reduce his shopping menu.

Also, Yaya Abubakar, a gas retail outlet operator, said he ran out of the stock of the product.

He attributed the price hike to the sharp declined in the supply due to the industrial crisis between the Dangote Refinary and workers’ unions.

Abubakar, however, expressed the hope that prices would crash when the supply improved. (NAN)
