Brief introduction about yourself and your background?
My name is Samson Oriyomi. I started my career as a Cybersecurity Engineer, working to protect systems and data. But photography has always been something I was drawn to. I developed interest in it when I was 15, and ever since, it became more than just an interest. In 2020, I decided to fully focus on photography. Since then, I’ve been working as a fine art photographer, with my work shown in Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, and the United Kingdom.
What inspired your shift from cybersecurity to photography?
Cybersecurity is very structured, while photography gave me room to express myself. I also realized that both fields involve observation. One is about finding hidden issues, the other is about revealing hidden beauty. That connection made it easier for me to move fully into photography.
How has your background in cybersecurity influenced your photography?
It taught me to pay attention to details and to be patient. I approach my work carefully, whether it’s light, texture, or emotion. It also helped me stay disciplined and organized in my work.
What is your own definition of photography?
Photography means creating images that goes beyond what is visible. It is about expressing ideas and emotions, not just taking pictures. Each image should have meaning and connect with people.
Your work often explores unseen elements. Can you shed more light on this?
The unseen refers to things people do not usually notice such as emotions, small details, or quiet moments. My work focuses on bringing those things forward and making them visible.
What are the challenges encountered when you changed careers?
Leaving a stable career was not easy. There were doubts and financial concerns, and I had to build a new path from the beginning. But I stayed consistent and kept working.
How did you build your reputation as an international photographer?
I focused on creating meaningful work and sharing it. I also participated in exhibitions and connected with other artists. Over time, my work started gaining recognition.
Your advice to young people who want to follow an unconventional path?
Young people should be opened to exploring different things, Don’t be afraid to change direction. Stay consistent, keep learning, and be patient.
Is there any connection between technology and photography?
Technology plays an important role, from editing to sharing work online. My background makes it easier for me to adapt and use these tools.
As a photographer, what message do you want people take from your photography?
I want people to slow down and notice the little things. There is meaning in everyday moments if we pay attention.
Tell us your most memorable achievement so far?
Exhibiting my work in different countries and seeing people connect with it has been very meaningful to me.
What are your future goals?
