The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), a civil rights group, has called on President Bola Tinubu to enforce his directive against premature campaigns for the 2027 presidential election.

In a press statement released on 26th August 2025, HURIWA requested the president to order law enforcement agencies to stop individuals and groups whose billboards and media campaigns have appeared all over country against the existing electoral laws.

HURIWA stated that despite President Tinubu’s April 2025 disownment of campaign materials through a statement from his special adviser, Bayo Onanuga, the campaign has become more rampant.

The group noted that many streets in state capitals and the FCT are “dotted and decorated” with the President’s 2027 campaign fliers.

“We urgently call on individuals and groups funding this 2027 political campaign… to cease immediately,” HURIWA recalled the President’s previous statement.

HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, expressed disappointment that no clear order has been given to law enforcement agencies to stop the campaigns.

“What we are yet to understand is why the commander-in-chief… would not condemn the lawless actions of his identified loyalists… that law enforcement authority, including the Independent National Electoral commission (INEC), have yet to enforce the law,” Onwubiko said.

HURIWA also urged the president to show he is a leader for everyone and set a democratic example by ensuring that the rule of law is upheld.
The group appealed to the President to order the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, to immediately pull down the illegal billboards and fliers for the 2027 presidential poll.
