Worried about the recent wave of attacks across Benue communities, a University don, Professor Steve Wordu has called for the reformation of the security sector in the country.
Prof, Wordu who is a Political Socialist and Public Policy Analyst of the University of Port Harcourt, (UNIPORT) Rivers State made the call while speaking in an interview with select journalists in the State.
Prof. Wordu who spoke on landmark achievements of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after two years laments that nothing has improved with respect to security sector management of the country.
While commiserating with families of Benue killings, Prof. Wordu says with the recent killings and attacks in the country, Nigeria has relapsed into the worst kind of Insecurity experiences within the past two years.
According to Prof. Wordu, one of the things that endeared President Tinubu to most Nigerians was his role in anti- military governance.
His words “President Tinubu was very active in pro-democracy movement, he suffered for it and paid huge sacrifice for it. So coming from that background and anticident in democracy agitations, it is expected that His Excellency should be the number one citizen protecting the philosophy the virtues and the principles of democratic governance.
Speaks further “but what we are seeing under his watch in the past two years hasn’t shown his full commitment to Democratic consolidation in the Country”.
“So if we are to score this regime from Security indicator, I can say that based on the available statistical data, this administration has not achieved anything ” said Prof. Wordu.
Addressing security sector reforms according to Prof. Wordu, starts with a reform of the military weapon systems, training and re-training of military personnel and motivation of military and security personnel.
“There is very low morale among the personnel, staff or officers of the armed forces and security agencies because of poor condition of service, poor renumeration, high risk involved in their work and lack of functional weapon systems” he said.
“When there’s a reform of the military weapon systems, improvement in the training and motivation of military personnel and security agencies, personnel will be motivated enough to sacrifice in the protection and security of the country’ Prof. Wordu said.
