Consumers have called for stricter measures and proper monitoring of packaged water producers in Nigeria to improve the quality of water they sell.
One of the consumers, Mrs. Mirian George at Rukpuokwu in Obio Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State narrated a situation she witnessed to newdawnngr ; where a seller took one of the table water containers in her shop, refilled and re-sealed it for sale.
She asked that electricity supply be more regular to aid boiling of water which is her preference for water treatment.
”To me, the best water so far is boiled water. All these sachet, plastic and others àre not safe for drinking as more water producers now cut corners. I have even witnessed a situation where somebody used the Cway container to go and refill with borehole water in my area here, just used the refilling rubber and cocked it again to resell. Little wonder that people now come down with one health challenge or the other due to the water they drank. Hence, to me I believe the best option is just the boiled water. We also need constant power supply” Mrs George said.
Other consumers, Mrs Gladys Nna and Mr. Ordu Ordu complained of smelly sachet water, coloured water and visible dirts in some of the products.
Water Day is celebrated annually on 22 March to raise awareness on the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water according United Nations’ report.
The 2025 theme is “Glacier Preservation”, which is selected to align with the first-ever World Day for Glaciers, drawing global attention to the rapid melting of glaciers and its devastating impact on people and the planet.
