…says project to boost connectivity
Lagos Gov Sanwo-Olu
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced that construction of the 68-kilometre Green Line rail project will begin this year, connecting key economic hubs including Marina, Victoria Island, Lekki Free Trade Zone, and Ajah.
The Green Line rail is the third of such to be embarked upon by the government.
It will be recalled that the state government had earlier commissioned Blue and Red Line project in two different parts of the state.
Sanwo-Olu made the announcement on Friday during the commissioning of the reconstructed Chief Yesufu Abiodun Oniru/Akiogun Road, an alternative route to the Admiralty Circle Toll Plaza in Lekki, Eti-Osa Local Government Area.
Speaking on the Green Line he said,“This project will be a game-changer for the Lekki-Epe corridor,” emphasising that the expansion of the current road network will complement the new rail infrastructure.
He urged residents to cooperate with the government throughout the development process.
Federal and Private Sector Backing for the Green Line
The Lagos State government has secured federal funding and private investment for the project.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) to finance the rail line, aligning with broader efforts to improve urban mobility and reduce traffic congestion in Africa’s largest city.
The federal government has earmarked N146.14 billion ($95 million) in counterpart funding, managed by MOFI on behalf of the Ministry of Transport, as part of its N49.74 trillion ($32 billion) proposed budget for 2025.
The Ministry of Transport will receive N256.73 billion ($167 million) in total allocations to drive infrastructure initiatives, including the Green Line.

Lagos Expands Public Transport Network
Sanwo-Olu’s administration has prioritised rail and road expansion to accommodate Lagos’ growing population and economic activity. The Lagos Red Line, another major rail project, recently increased its daily services to nine trips to meet rising commuter demand.
The Green Line rail project is expected to enhance connectivity, ease gridlock, and boost real estate and commercial activity across Lagos’ rapidly developing eastern corridor.
