TCA Gallery Lagos successfully concluded Disrupting the Frame, a compelling group exhibition of contemporary fine art photography that ran from February 4 to February 12, 2025. The exhibition featured works by Mavic Chijioke Okeugo, Sanjo Lawal, Dafe Oboro, and Chidozie Maduka, four artists whose practices interrogate visual conventions while expanding the boundaries of photographic expression.
Curated around the idea of rupture of form, narrative, and perception Disrupting the Frame invited viewers to reconsider photography not merely as documentation, but as an active site of experimentation, resistance, and re-imagination. Across the exhibition, each artist presented a distinct visual language, yet together their works formed a powerful dialogue on identity, memory, place, and the politics of representation.
Mavic Chijioke Okeugo’s work explored layered subjectivities and introspective visual narratives, while Sanjo Lawal examined spatial tension and abstraction as tools for reframing lived experience. Dafe Oboro’s photographs challenged linear storytelling through fragmented compositions, and Chidozie Maduka’s practice questioned the limits of realism, merging conceptual rigor with striking visual form.
The exhibition drew a diverse audience of collectors, artists, curators, and photography enthusiasts, sparking critical conversations around contemporary African photography and its evolving role within global art discourse. Visitors praised the exhibition for its bold curatorial direction and the strength of the individual practices presented.
Speaking on the exhibition, TCA Gallery Lagos reaffirmed its commitment to supporting experimental and forward-thinking artistic voices, positioning Disrupting the Frame as part of its ongoing mission to champion contemporary art practices that challenge dominant visual narratives.
With its successful close, Disrupting the Frame stands as a significant moment for contemporary fine art photography in Lagos, underscoring the vitality, diversity, and conceptual depth of emerging and established Nigerian photographic artists.
