The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a tragic road accident involving a J5 Ford bus (FKJ 724 YC) and a Mercedes truck (FKJ 746 YC) at Ilubirin, inward Sura, along the Lagos Third Mainland Bridge.
The accident, which occurred earlier today, resulted in the death of one person, while four others were rescued.
According to LASTMA officials, under the leadership of General Manager Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, rescue operations commenced immediately upon their arrival at the scene. With assistance from bystanders, four victims were extricated from the wreckage. Sadly, one person trapped inside the J5 Ford bus, which was heavily loaded with pepper and other perishable goods, did not survive the crash.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the J5 Ford bus suffered a brake failure while traveling at high speed, leading to a collision with the Mercedes truck.
Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigerian Police Force, and LASAMBUS, collaborated with LASTMA to rescue victims and manage the situation. The survivors were promptly taken to the General Hospital on Lagos Island for urgent medical care.
To restore normal traffic flow on the busy bridge, LASTMA officials worked swiftly to clear the accident scene, removing the damaged vehicles and spilled goods.
