Nigeria’s global aviation rating has climbed to 75.5%, lifting the country off international watchlists, according to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.

During Thursday’s commissioning of the Juhi-2 aviation fuel depot at Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, Keyamo stated the significant improvement, which now allows airlines to access dry lease aircraft.

The nation’s aviation rating had previously been at 49%, but last month, after the Federal Government signed the Cape Town Convention Practice Direction, it saw a notable jump to 70.5%. The latest rise to 75.5% further boosts Nigeria’s standing in the global aviation sector.

Keyamo stated that the improved rating will lead to an influx of aircraft into Nigeria, suggesting that facilities like the Juhi-2 aviation fuel depot may need to expand their capacity to meet rising demand.

Patience Dappa, Chairman of Juhi-2 Limited, emphasized the importance of the newly commissioned fuel depot, describing it as not just an infrastructure achievement, but a symbol of excellence and innovation in aviation fuel management.

The facility, covering 46,000 square meters, boasts a storage capacity of 15 million litres of Jet A1 fuel and incorporates advanced systems for filtration, fuel discharge, and fire prevention.

“This facility is designed to provide a steady, reliable supply of jet fuel to MMIA, MMA1, MMA2, and nearby airbases,” Dappa noted.

She also stressed that Juhi-2 will serve various aviation stakeholders, from airlines to private jet operators, ensuring top-tier fuel service that minimizes downtime and maximizes operational efficiency.

The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku added that the Juhi-2 depot will play a key role in improving service delivery and supporting national economic growth as Nigeria’s aviation sector continues to expand.

The rise in Nigeria’s global aviation rating signals a stronger, more competitive aviation industry poised for growth, with new opportunities in aircraft leasing and infrastructure development.
