Community leaders in Ikorodu North local government of Lagos state have called for further government intervention in their region, including the establishment of a polytechnic, construction of a pedestrian bridge, and the development of a secondary school.
These requests were made during the commissioning of the Lambo Lasunwon Road, a key project that links several communities in the local government area.
Prince Adeniran Ogunbanwo, Chairman of the Community Development Committee (CDC), and Honourable Sunday Olusanya, a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and Chairman of the Joint Community Development Association (CDA), led the appeal for additional infrastructure that they say will improve education and safety in the area.
Speaking on behalf of the community, Ogunbanwo emphasized Ikorodu’s economic significance and its contribution to Lagos State’s development. He highlighted the Odogunyan Industrial Complex, which he described as the largest in Lagos, calling for improved road networks to support the growing industrial activities.
“Ikorodu needs special status. When you’re allocating projects, where others get two, Ikorodu should get eight because Ikorodu delivers. We have the largest industrial complex in Lagos at Odogunyan, and it requires urgent road construction and intervention,” Ogunbanwo said, addressing Lagos State Deputy Governor, who was present at the event.
Ogunbanwo expressed gratitude for the state government’s ongoing development efforts, including projects in areas such as Ginti, Adamo, and Ipakodo Road, but stressed that Ikorodu still needed more. Specifically, he requested the establishment of a new polytechnic in the area, stating that technical education is vital for the community’s youth.
“We thank you for upgrading the Lagos State Polytechnic to Lagos State University of Science and Technology, but Ikorodu still needs another polytechnic. We can’t do without technical education,” Ogunbanwo added.
A major concern raised by the community is the safety of students crossing the busy Shagamu-Ikorodu road, which lacks both bus stops and pedestrian bridges. Ogunbanwo called for the construction of these infrastructures to prevent further accidents and ensure the safety of residents.
“There is no single bus stop or pedestrian bridge on the Shagamu-Ikorodu road. We need your intervention to place bus stops and pedestrian bridges at strategic locations to prevent accidents,” he pleaded.
Honourable Sunday Olusanya, in his remarks, also highlighted the need for a secondary school in Lambo Lasunwon. He explained that students currently have to travel long distances to access secondary education, putting them at risk.
“We have already acquired one hectare of land for the construction of a secondary school. Our primary school graduates are forced to travel far for secondary education, endangering their lives. We plead for the government’s support to construct a secondary school here,” Olusanya said.
In addition to education infrastructure, Olusanya called on the government to improve adjoining roads in the area, which would further open up the region for development. He noted that communities like Araromi, Lambo Lasunwon, Egiri Ẹkun, and Orofo would benefit from better road access.

In response, Deputy Governor Dr. Kadiri Hamzat acknowledged the requests and promised to address the issues. He assured the community that the government would review the proposal for the polytechnic and secondary school at an upcoming executive council meeting. He also agreed on the importance of the pedestrian bridge, especially for the safety of children, and pledged to look into the matter.

“You have one hectare of land and the documents? By God’s grace, it will be done. We will discuss this at the executive council meeting. I also agree that the pedestrian bridge is highly desirable, especially for the safety of our children and students,” Dr. Hamzat said.
The Deputy Governor also addressed landlords in the area, urging them not to increase rent excessively, especially for students, noting that while economic conditions are tough, it is important to keep housing affordable for students in the community.
“We understand that things are tough, but please, do not extort our students. Keep rent affordable for students coming to this area,” Dr. Hamzat appealed.
