Media moguls, top govt functionaries for Jakande Memorial Lecture

Media moguls, top government functionaries, among others, will converge on Lagos on Tuesday to x-rayt he rapidly changing media landscape and survival strategies.

The General Secretary, Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Dr Iyobosa Uwugiaren, made this known in a statement on Sunday, in Abuja..
He listed those expected to include Mr Nduka Obaigbena, Chairman Thisday and Arise Media Group; and Chairman/Publisher of Vanguard Newspapers, Mr Sam Amuka.
Also expected are the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, and Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
He said that former Governor of Ogun, Chief Segun Osoba and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gen. Ike Nwachukwu were among others expected at the programme.
Uwugiaren said that the dignitaries would gather in different capacities, at
the second Alhaji Lateef Jakande Annual Memorial Lecture, put together by the NGE.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the NGE, a professional body of editors and media executives, instituted the annual memorial lecture in 2023 in honour of late Jakande, its founding president.
Uwugiaren said the lecture was a testament to the cherished service rendered by Jakande.
He recalled that after discharging uncommon duties to the Nigerian media, Jakande went on to render appreciable service as the first civilian Governor of Lagos State, and as a Minister of Works and Housing.
“Jakande’s name remains treasured whenever committed service is mentioned in the media and public service.
He said the 2024 lecture would provide another opportunity for media executives and stakeholders to interrogate issues affecting the industry.
The scribe said that scholars, students of mass communication, among others would also be in attendance.
The NGE was formed on May 20, 1961 to serve as an elite organisation of editors.
The body was conceived to occupy the strategic middle ground of editorial senior managers between media owners and the general workforce of journalists.(NAN)
