Blackout in Yewa North I communities: Dangotte moves to pacify aggrieved residents

In an apparent move to forestall a planned protest by aggrieved youths in host communities in Yewa North 1 constitutency of Ogun state, Dangotte Cement PLC has initiated moves to procure twenty electric poles ,cables and stimulators damaged by its trucks.

The move was as a result of several talks between the constituency team led by Honourable Adegoke Awoso, House of assembly member representing Yewa North 1 and a management team of Dangotte Cement led by Demola Olowo and representatives of Ibadan Electric Distribution Company,IBEDC.

The tripartite meeting is with a view to bring long lasting succour to the communities thrown into darkness in the last past one year by the activities of reckless truck drivers of the company.

In an interview with Newdawnngr.com, Honourable Awoso said the evaluation of damaged poles had been done before he raised the matter on the floor of the house last Tuesday but the delay in implementation by Dangotte and need to pacify the aggrieved youths of the community necessitated his intervention adding,”time is running out.”

He told our reporter that his decision was to enable the Dangotte team expedite action on getting approval from it’s procurement department so as to end the over one year of blackout in the affected communities.

It will be recalled that Newdawnngr.com had published the report of activities of the drivers of the companies trucks which has disrupted power supply in the area.

Honourable Awoso, the member representing the Yewa North1 constituency had in his submission on Tuesday October 10 plenary, had drawn the attention of the Speaker, Rt Hon.Olakunle Oluomo, to the activities of the company and the disruption of life of some communities in his constituency by reckless drivers of the Cement conglomerate.

The member spoke under personal explanation on the havoc caused the communities and his constituency.

In his response,the Speaker,Hon Oluomo had observed that the activities of companies ought to be of great benefit to host communities and not the other way round.

He therefore directed the Joint House Committees on Industry,Trade and Investments as well as Environment to liase with the special Adviser on Works to state Governor Dapo Abiodun to invite Dangotte Management team to a parley.

However, in a telephone interview with Newdawnngr.com, Honourable Awoso disclosed that the meeting fixed for next Monday October 16 between the team set up by the house leadership and management of Dangotte is to enable the two parties address some long standing issues like repair of roads, solve the prevalent problems of electricity supply which has eluded the community for the past one year and resolve the issues sorrounding the usage of Trailer parks by the company to prolong the life span of roads in the Yewa North 1 constituency.

Before now,he said the team set up to negotiate with Dangotte group had agreed that the company will provide materials like twenty poles, stimulators and cables to effect repairs in order to restore electricity supply to the affected communities.

As for now,he said the decision of the procurement Department of Dangotte group is delaying the commencement of the materials to commence repair works on the electricity supply to the community.

To expedite action on the repairs and lessened the burden on Dangotte and all, he said the management of Ibadan Electriciy Distribution Company,IBEDC, have undertaken to provide free labour to fix the materials supplied by Dangotte in order to restore electricity supply to the affected communities.

The Monday October 16 meeting with representatives of Dangotte and the House leadership ,Awoso said, will also iron out and resolve areas of conflict in the operations of Dangotte for the benefit of both parties.
This he said include issues of road repairs and usage of Trailer parks by the company.
The none use of Trailer parks by the Dangotte trucks have been identified as one of the causes of frequent damage to roads in the area.

Newdawnngr.com gathered that the aggrieved youths members of the communities affected are planning a public protest for next week which prompted the Dangotte group to take steps towards restoring electricity to the affected communities which has been in darkness for the past one year.

Honourable Awoso told Newdawnngr.com that the outcome of the meeting will determine the next line of action by his constituency.
