Death toll in Romanian explosion rises to three

The death toll from explosions at a liquefied gas fuel station near Bucharest has risen to three, with a man succumbing to serious burns overnight.

The country’s Health Ministry disclosed this on Thursday.

Two people died immediately in the blasts in the village of Crevidia on Saturday evening and 57 were injured, two of whom remain in a critical condition.

Twelve patients have been transferred to other EU countries, after Romania activated the bloc’s civil protection mechanism on Sunday.

The country lack the infrastructure to treat the most serious types of burn.

Prosecutors have launched an investigation, initially into persons unknown.

The cause of the explosions has not yet been identified.

According to the Environment Ministry, the fuel station had its licence withdrawn in October 2020.

Speculation in the country’s media suggests that the explosions occurred while fuel was being improperly transferred from one tank truck to another.
