Fine art photographer Mavic Chijioke Okeugo successfully concluded his solo exhibition titled Afro, held from August 21 to 26 2023 at Terra Kulture, one of Lagos’s foremost cultural destinations.
The week-long exhibition attracted a diverse audience of art collectors, cultural leaders, creatives, media professionals, and invited guests, all drawn by Okeugo’s compelling visual exploration of Black identity through fine art photography. Afro presented a powerful series of portraits centered on natural hair as a symbol of heritage, resilience, self-expression, and pride, positioning the Afro not merely as a hairstyle but as a cultural and political statement.
Through richly textured compositions, dramatic lighting, and emotive subjects, Okeugo’s works bridged tradition and contemporary aesthetics. Each photograph invited viewers into intimate narratives that celebrated individuality while honoring collective African and diasporic histories. The exhibition layout encouraged reflection, with guests engaging deeply with the artworks and participating in thoughtful conversations around representation, beauty, and cultural ownership.
Speaking at the exhibition, Okeugo shared that Afro was born from a desire to reclaim visual narratives often overlooked or misrepresented. “This body of work is about visibility and affirmation,” he noted. “It is a very celebration of who we are unapologetically, authentically, and beautifully.”
The opening night and subsequent days saw strong attendance, with guided walkthroughs, informal artist-led discussions, and meaningful interactions between the artist and guests. The warm reception underscored the growing appreciation for contemporary African fine art photography and reaffirmed Terra Kulture’s role as a vital platform for cultural dialogue.
With Afro, Mavic Chijioke Okeugo continues to establish himself as a significant voice in contemporary African photography, using his lens to document, elevate, and reimagine Black identity for global audiences.
