The story of how Ms. Onyeka Onwuenu came to musical firmament in Nigeia is an open copy to most Nigerians above 50; but what is not known to a greater number of them is that she is a strong willed woman that loves his dad to the point of penning a book ,…., in his memory.
Onyeka known poetical as elegant stallion, a coinage by Azuka Jebose Molokwu, first breezed into the scene in the 1980s with ‘walk right back to me,’ an Isely Brothers song produced by the late Sonny Okosuns on EMI Records label. Then a youth coper with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). Before then, she had worked the former United Nations Secretary, Kofi Annan, at the the UN secertariat New York, produced a documentary depicting the corrupt/wasteful nature of Nigerian leaders titled ….
She was among the few early female musicians in Nigeria together with Okusuns that flew Nigerian flag at the frontline state of Africa in demand for political freedom for the then frontline states.
Onyeka made her mark in the music scene so much so that no major concert like Children of Africa, organised by the late Okpuzu Abriba, Onwuka Kalu, Lekki Sunsplash et al is complete without the ‘elegant stallion’ .
Her art was so good that Benson and Hedges, the international cigarette brand thst was behind Golden Tones, signed her on and recoded her album….in 19…
She once led the Lagos chapters of Performing Musicians Employers’ Association in the hood old days of Chief Tony Okoroji as the national president of the musician’s body.
