What it’ll do to Nigeria’s economy
The much awaited massive Dangote Refinery in Ibeju Lekki axis of Lagos State will roar into life when President Muhammadu Buhari declares it open on 22 May.
Apart from fulfilling the promise that the refinery will start firing its boilers before Buhari leaves power on 29 May, the refinery will help stop the shameful condition of Nigeria which has become a butt of snide remarks in the comity of nations. That is, the country possesses huge hydrocarbon deposits, yet it imports refined petroleum products at huge cost to the nation, creating terrible multiplier effect on the populace.
The planned commissioning was disclosed by Buhari’s Special Assistant on Digital Communications, Bashir Ahmad, in a tweet.
Ahmad wrote: “Efforts by the Federal Government to make Nigeria self-sufficient in local refining of crude oil to save the scarce foreign exchange used in the importation of petroleum products have received a boost as the 650,000 barrels per day Dangote Refinery, the world’s largest single-train refinery, is set for inauguration on May 22nd, 2023, by President Muhammadu Buhari.”
