As at the last count, about nine gubernatorial contestants have reportedly purchased nomination forms from the Labour Party to slug it out at the Party’s gubernatorial primaries scheduled for sometime in April. While some of these contestants have devoted their time and resources to reaching out to real Party members who will determine the next governorship candidate of the Party, others have invested their time and resources in trying to hijack the Party’s structure from Abuja and maligning some of the Party’s best materials for the governorship election.

How would you explain a situation where an individual or group of black legs went to Abuja to allegedly pay money for the Party executive in the State to be dissolved and replaced with individuals whose membership of the Labour Party in Imo State is in serious doubts? What sense does it even make to change a Party leadership in the middle of a general election? Those behind such moves are certainly the first and prime suspects as miles whose aim is to derail the very promising chances of the Labour Party in Imo State in the coming election.

My personal inquiries show that a key ally of Hope Uzodimma who served as a commissioner in the 3R coven is the hatchet man used to execute these dirty jobs of undermining the chances of the LP in the State. While it is made to appear that the new Labour Party exco in Imo State is put in place to help a certain political greenhorn from Mbaise who is purportedly aspiring for governorship, every analysis points to the fact that these things are aimed at planting a weak candidate in the Party and doing it in such a way that many members of the Party in the State would become disenchanted with the Party, thereby, giving Uzodimma an easy ride back to Government House.
The same group of people has gone to the media to plant falsehoods against key and most viable contenders for the LP governorship candidate, including alleging that Chief Martin Agbaso is a mole of Hope Uzodimma. Nothing can be more insulting. While it is public knowledge that Chief Agbaso had a short public bromance with Uzodimma during the controversial 2019 elections, it would be disrespectful to regard Agbaso as a mole to Uzodimma.
Chief Agbaso has had an almost lifelong ambition to be governor of Imo State and in 2007, actually won the election glaringly but became victim to the power play that defined that transitional period. Ochoudo as he is popularly called is also a self-satisfied, highly knowledgeable and very competitive man, whose boldness is sometimes mistaken for arrogance. Such a character cannot be anyone’s mole nor a placeholder for anyone no matter how tempting the offer might be.
Given its performance in the 25th February election and the very obvious unpopularity of the ruling APC in the State, the governorship race in Imo State is LP’s to win or lose, and its losing out in that election, will be entirely its making. Imolites are very enlightened people, and they will not fail to resoundingly reject the LP if they confirm that the processes leading to the selection of its governorship candidate is tainted with fraud. The national leadership of the Party must resist the temptation of being used by outsiders and fifth columnists to destroy that Party in Imo.
The Labour Party national leadership must be able to weed out the fifth columnists in Imo State, who are either working for extraneous interests or for their personal financial interests, without giving a hoot about the Party’s fortunes in the coming election.
