We are under pressure to compromise 2023 polls – Defence Chief

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor has disclosed that the security agencies and the military under pressure from unnamed quarters to compromise 2023 polls.

He said military personnel face pressure through inducements, but the armed forces would remain apolitical as it is taking the necessary measures to ensure compliance with the directive of the President Muhammadu Buhari to maintain neutrality.

Irabor disclosed this today during the Ministerial weekly briefing at the presidential villa,Abuja.

The Chief of defense Staff who provided updates of strides made by the Military in the fight against insurgency, terrorism and banditry, stated that personnel are being trained to follow the codified rules of engagement to follow before, during and after the elections.

He also spoke of the key achievements of the military in the effort to keep the country safe including more recruitment into all branches of the security services, routing of insurgency and banditry as well as curtailing oil theft.

Irabor noted that over 300,000 people have been freed from abductors since 2014 while refugees who fled the north-east due to the insurgency have started to return.

The CDS also said that former insurgents currently under training will graduate in February 2023.

The goal, Irabor said, is to increase the number of on-the-ground personnel to combat insurgency and banditry and curtail oil theft which will eventually lead to increased crude oil production.
