From November 18th to 25th, 2022, the quiet elegance of Rele Gallery Los Angeles was transformed by the evocative lens of Nigerian fine art photographer Chidozie Maduka. His debut U.S. solo exhibition, “Universal Light”, offered a profound and poetic meditation on light, identity, and presence—securing his position as a rising force in contemporary African photography.
Though participating virtually from Nigeria, Maduka’s impact was immediate and undeniable. His works—intimate, atmospheric, and deeply symbolic—spoke volumes. The gallery space became a sanctuary of stillness and inquiry, where viewers encountered not just photographs, but portals into lived experience and spiritual nuance. The hybrid format allowed guests to interact with Maduka through virtual artist talks and studio walkthroughs, lending a rare closeness to the creative process behind the work.

At the heart of “Universal Light” was Maduka’s mastery of light—not only as a technical element, but as a narrative device. Each image in the exhibition reflected a sensitivity to natural illumination, shadow, and spatial tension. His compositions, often minimalist in form but rich in emotion, explored themes of solitude, divinity, black identity, and the quiet tension between vulnerability and power.
Working primarily in staged photography, Maduka constructs scenes that feel both timeless and contemporary. His subjects—sometimes veiled, sometimes obscured—invite contemplation, challenging the viewer to consider what is revealed and what is withheld. The use of light becomes symbolic: a guiding force, a witness, a metaphor for internal transformation.
Critics, collectors, and creatives alike responded enthusiastically. The exhibition drew a diverse and engaged audience, many of whom were captivated by the spiritual and emotional resonance of Maduka’s work. The opening night was particularly memorable, filled with thoughtful conversation and deep admiration for a photographic voice as mature as it is distinct.
“Chidozie’s photographs speak with quiet authority,” said Adenrele Sonariwo, Founder and Director of Rele Gallery. “In a world filled with noise, he gives us images that breathe—images that ask us to slow down, to look closer, and to feel. That is the power of true fine art photography.”
Rele Gallery, with established spaces in Lagos and Los Angeles and plans to expand to London, continues to shape global conversations around African art. “Universal Light” is a testament to the gallery’s mission to elevate boundary-pushing creatives and present African photography not just as documentation, but as an art form that moves, heals, and transcends.
For Chidozie Maduka, “Universal Light” is not just an exhibition—it is an arrival. A bold, quiet, luminous declaration of his voice in the world of fine art photography.
