The exhibition was held at Terra Kulture in Lagos, Nigeria from 20th to 23rd November 2022. The Witness Within the work of Samson Oriyomi, is a deeply introspective solo exhibition that explores the silent observer that resides in every human being, the part of us that sees, feels, and remembers beyond words.

Through a compelling body of photographic works, Samson Oriyomi invites viewers into a space of reflection where the external world meets the internal landscape of thought, memory, and identity. This exhibition goes beyond images and focuses on presence. Each photograph serves as a visual meditation, capturing fleeting moments that often go unnoticed, including subtle expressions, quiet environments, fragmented details, and emotional undercurrents that speak more powerfully than grand narratives.

The artist uses light, shadow, texture, and composition to reveal layers of meaning, encouraging viewers to pause and look beyond the surface. At its core, The Witness Within examines themes of self awareness, vulnerability, and perception. It questions how we see ourselves versus how we are seen, and how our inner experiences shape our understanding of the world around us.

The photographs act as mirrors, reflecting not only the subject within the frame but also the emotions and memories of the viewer. Drawing from personal experiences and universal human conditions, Samson Oriyomi creates a dialogue between what is seen and what is unseen. Moments of solitude, tension, stillness, and transformation are carefully documented, allowing the audience to connect with the work on an emotional and psychological level.

The absence of noise in many of the images emphasizes the power of silence as a form of expression.
In a fast paced world driven by constant stimulation, Samson Oriyomi stated that The Witness Within offers a rare opportunity to slow down and engage in quiet contemplation. It challenges viewers to become witnesses of their own inner worlds, to acknowledge their thoughts, confront their truths, and embrace the beauty found in introspection.

An observer at the exhibition shared his experience:
“Walking into The Witness Within, I did not feel like I was entering a typical photography exhibition. I felt like I was stepping into someone’s mind, and somehow my own at the same time. There was a quietness in the space, not just in sound, but in emotion. Every image seemed to slow me down, forcing me to look longer, think deeper, and feel more honestly.

“What struck me most was how personal the photographs felt, yet they spoke to experiences I could not easily put into words. Some images felt like memories I had forgotten, while others felt like emotions I did not even realize I was carrying. It was as if the artist was holding up a mirror, not to my face, but to something deeper within me”.

Ultimately, this exhibition is an invitation to see, to feel, and to awaken the witness within.
