This figure was reeled out by Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency which also revealed that 4860 domestic and sexual violence cases have been recorded this year alone.

Lagos reports 4,860 domestic violence, rape, sexual assault in 10 months

The Executive Secretary of the agency, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, disclosed this, Monday, at a two days training for Police prosecutors, state prosecutors and family support units in police stations in Lagos.

According to her, while five women have died from domestic violence this year, six women died last year. She said all the men involved are already being prosecuted and are in custody.

She said the training was put together to help prosecutors understand best practices in prosecuting sexual and gender-based violence cases.

According to her, state and police prosecutors play a very important role in ensuring justice for domestic and sexual violence survivors. She added that it is the reason that they need to have very deep knowledge about what domestic and sexual violence is and how to handle the cases.

One of the facilitators, Executive Director, Centre for Women’s Health and Information, Mrs. Atinuke Odukoya, said the training is critical because it would help prosecutors to adopt the survivor centres approach, which would help victims and survivors get justice.

She expressed optimism that once victims and survivors begin to get justice, it will help to reduce cases of domestic and sexual violence.
