Rivers United might be top of the table and looking pretty good for the title but their striker, Nyima Nwagua says the team is not thinking of being title winners but focusing on winning all their remaining games.

NPFL Matchday 30 Roundup: Rivers United edge closer to the title after key away win

The Port-Harcourt side currently sits top of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) table with 67 points, seven ahead of second-placed Plateau United and 18 points ahead of third-placed Rangers with six games to go.

Despite the massive difference, Nwagua told www.npfl.ng that he and his teammates are more focused now than when the league started.

“We are focused on our remaining matches. We have done well to this point and we will not allow complacency to set in. We (the players) are not taking anything for granted,” said Nwagua, who joined Rivers United from Kano Pillars.

“I know we are not there yet, we are not satisfied. There are still six matches to go. This is football and you do not take things for granted. I have not seen Rivers United crested on the trophy so we keep working because we are not there yet.

“For this, we will keep working until the Nigeria Football Federation, the League Management Company and the whole of Nigeria comes to Port-Harcourt to give us the trophy.

“It is at that point we will relax and know we have won the title,” he said.

Nwagua also revealed that the secret of their successes this season has been down to hard work and commitment.

The 28-year-old, who has scored five goals for the Port-Harcourt side enthused that the calibre of players in the team and the bond between them is the major factor in their charge to the title.

“I didn’t want to leave Pillars but after I won the Federation Cup title with them I decided to seek a new challenge and come to Rivers who have been seeking me out for a while,” he revealed.

“I am enjoying my time here and I must say the secret behind our good form this season has been God, hard work and dedication.

“The crop of players now at Rivers United, just like the coaches will always say, we are willing to learn, we are willing to work and we are willing to learn.

“That has been our secret and we have been working hard and you know with God at some point he will start giving you what you worked for. Hard work has kept us this far, “Nwagua added.

Rivers United will be home to Abia Warriors this weekend in Port-Harcourt in a Match Day 33 fixture.
