A Lagos state university scholar,Dr Sinmisola Oso,has called for a radical approach to waste management in the state in view of it’s growing population .
This new approach the scholar said is necessary if the state must tackle the effect of the over 123,000 people who migrate to the city daily.
Dr Oso,of the department of Microbiology of Lagos state University,Ojo observed that this rapid population growth has led to the growth of slums in the state with it’s attendant effect on the environment.
Delivering a paper titled,”Deepening participants understanding of key Sustainability Issues in Lagos state at a 2-Day Training programme organised for Journalists by the United Nations Information Centre, she said government deliberate and sustained intervention in this area is desirable if the state must prepare for and attain it’s mega city status.
In order to achieve this,she called for the introduction of Colour Coded Bins for sanitation as being done in advanced countries to help in appropriate waste collection and disposable.
Dr Oso also spoke of the need to improve on waste water recycling on the state for efficient water management.
According to her,a city of 22 million residents with only 10% of the population with access to clean water need to have alternative ways to increase access in order to meet the 2034 Sustainable Development Goals,SDG as set by the United Nations.
She observed that the city’s rapid population growth without attendant plans gas led to the growth of slums over the last decades.
In order to involve all age groups in having a clean environment,Oso advocated for the setting up of Eco Clubs in schools in the state to carry the population along in the government drive to maintain a clean environment.
To sustain this clubs,she advocated the enforcement of environmental laws in a hooks and public institutions in the state to have an excellent and clean environment.
In conclusion, Dr Oso urged the state government to sustain the introduction of an efficient rail system in the state to improve transportation and it’s multiplier effects on the economy .
